I support XRAY because I love the Portland music scene.
It’s one thing that hasn’t really changed since I was in high school in Southern Oregon, making weekend trips to this weird, wild, rain-soaked city.
The volunteer DJs at XRAY carry the flag for the independent spirit of Stumptown, playing local bands, but also introducing us to new music from everywhere. Every week I discover new (and old) songs when I tune in, and that kind of organic discovery just hits different than when a new track is fed to me by an algorithm on a streaming service. There’s storytelling to accompany the music, either through the DJ’s commentary or simply through the song it sits between in the playlist. It’s all very human, and idiosyncratic, and awesome. The community at XRAY cares about music, and local issues, and each other. It comes through in the energy when you turn the dial to 107.1, 91.1 or 91.7 when you're at the beach (Manzanita and Rock-Rock-Rockaway).
There is an absolute craft to broadcasting and curating music. And it’s a craft that I believe in keeping strong for myself (selfishly), my kids, and the city that inspires us.
So here's the deal: We're trying to raise $70,000 this Fund Drive. It's totally acheivable, but not without the generosity of our amazing community. We need those individual $50/$100 gifts or the $15/mo members** to get to our goal. Will you please join me in keeping commuity radio alive and well?
**If you become a member at $15 a month, you get an amazing soccer-inspired XRAY scarf designed by Sea Street Studio for free—or you can get one for a $45 donation (non-members) or $30 (members). Just make sure you specify that you want the scarf in the comment if you donate on this page!**
