Galaxy My Dear and Beautiful Music Fundraising Page

UPDATE: thanks to the early push, we are raising our goal!

Hoo boy, it's been quite a year so far. Thanks go out to anybody who can still manage to navigate some social media links in order to arrive at this page, double thanks if you can stick around for the following heartfelt messages from us three music-obsessed disc jockeys (if you just want to skip to the part about the thank-you gifts, we understand)...

Jason (Galaxy My Dear):  2020 has been a challenge for a number of reasons, for all of us. For me, the aspect that has been the hardest is being separated from my friends and community. Sharing spaces with others in the presence of live music, or at a bar with a friend DJing music late into the night, has been made impossible during the pandemic... and so, for me XRAY has become even more important for feeling connected to the community of musicians and music lovers in Portland and beyond. Help us continue to operate and grow this wonderful community resource by kicking in a few bucks if you have them to spare.

Dan (Beautiful Music):  The reason I keep showing up on the FM radio waves (almost) every week is complicated. One reason is that nobody's told me that I'm fired yet. Another reason is that I have too many records that I'm in love with to keep them all to myself. The main reason is that there is a tight, dedicated group of paid staff (and a wider network of volunteers) that is devoted to a project of providing this city with a meaningful array of music and talk radio that offers a completely different vibe than your typical Clear Channel mass-media bot-controlled circus. I'm happy to volunteer my time, but I want to ask your help to get the station (and it's hard-working staff) funded well into the coming year... thanks for any help you can give!

Austin (Galaxy My Dear):  Living a few blocks away from the XRAY studio, the neighborhood here in North Portland has always echoed a deep sense of community for me. Running into friends - fellow XRAY DJs, staff, musicians - before or after shows here in the neighborhood reminds me of how this station truly provides a platform to share the voices of our direct community. During this time of immense change in our social lives, having conversations and spending time together is a much less frequent occurrence, and I find myself tuning into XRAY more than ever to spend time with these same folks in a different way - through their stories and wonderfully curated shows over the radio waves. I know times are hard for all of us, but I humbly ask for you to consider a donation to help XRAY grow & sustain the work it has done to create a platform for our community during this time. Thank you!

So, here's our plan to show thanks for any donations you can provide - first off, anybody who donates ANY amount to our fundraising page will get access to an exclusive Halloween-themed mix curated by the three of us. Anybody who donates $20 or more to this fundraising page might receive one of the 10 following thank you gifts:

- $20 Gift Card and T-Shirt from the wonderful team over at Brass Tacks Sandwiches here in Portland, OR

- a vinyl LP from our friend Jed who runs the Concentric Circles label, a collection of barely-released and unreleased recordings from the 80's by Bay Area experimental musician John Di Stefano, "For the Moment"

- two vinyl LPs from our friend Hisham who co-runs the Sublime Frequencies label: "Where The Mountains Meet the Sky: Folk Music of Ladakh" and "Kwangkay: Funeral Music of the Dayak Benuaq of Borneo"

- the 2LP vinyl reissue of Japanese experimental/minimal group Pale Cocoon's 1984 cassette release "Mayu," released on Austin's label Incidental Music

- a $25 gift card from Nationale, as well as two prints from Nationale off-shoot company Le Oui - one by Nathan Preston & another by Brandon Vosika

- a $20 gift certificate to Austin's own physical shop space here in Portland, Tone Poem (located inside Nationale)

- the brand-spanking new vinyl LP from Portland-based trippers The Lavender Flu, called Tomorrow Cleaners, which is just out this week

- a package of three tickets to any of the current streaming options presented by Portland film temple Hollywood Theatre (the line-up is always powerful, check it out here: https://hollywoodtheatre.org/stream-at-home/)

- a $50 gift certificate to longtime Portland taco slingers ¿Por Qué No?

- a 750 mL bottle of the extremely tasty Kriek produced in Brussels by the brewery wizards at Cantillon - this bottle was purchased in person at the brewery just about 1 year ago by Dan and lovingly transported back (and now offered up, alongside these other gifts, in hope of garnering your needed support)

We will randomly select 10 donors to choose their preferred thank you gift (some items are only able to be picked up here in Portland). Thanks to everybody for helping us to reach our goal and support this community resource (including all those who donated thank you gifts)!

ABOUT 2020 Fall Fund Drive Peer 2 Peer

The mass consolidation of media has a profound effect on what we see and hear on a local level. It leads to a decline in support for local artists and local venues, promotion of community advocacy, in the ability to engage civically with our government and those who seek to be elected to it.

XRAY changes that. And this year has made that more important than ever before.

This year, while the world has been in turmoil, we've been busy

  • giving back to local artists who've lost gigs due to COVID-19

  • lifting up hundreds of nonprofits and Black-owned businesses with free spots on air

  • educating our community about the privileges they have and how to support their neighbors with our Annual Juneteenth & International Women's Day Teach-Ins

  • launching Portland's only daily local news podcast to keep our community in-the-know while apart

  • supporting the ongoing civic advocacy, education, and functioning of City Club of Portland when no other radio station would

  • interviewing 100+ local candidates (more than any other media outlet) to ensure democracy doesn't die in the distance.

  • and bringing joy and connectedness to the people of Portland.

We are proud to be independent and driven by the purpose of amplifying the best and most distinctive of Portland. Our resources are directed toward supporting the people who support us, and that includes you. By becoming a supporting member of XRAY, you are adding to the resources that help amplify Portland, and Portland’s own artists, venues, activists, innovators, educators, and the community members who make this city run. As a listener named John recently said, "I'm really grateful to live in a city with XRAY." And we're really grateful to live in a city with you.
