A weekly exploration of African and African American sounds from the '60's, '70's and beyond with cross-genre journeys into psych-rock, funk, disco, R&B, Soul, blues and the many flavors of jazz. Sounds of liberation, love, identity, the spiritual and pure groove from the greatest musical tradition your mind and body will ever embrace.
10 years ago, they said our dreams were too big, that we didn't understand how near-impossible our goals were. We understood--and a decade later we've defied the odds.
But the media industry hasn't been so lucky:
- Local news budgets? Slashed, if they even still exist.
- Musicians? Forget album sales, streaming took over and their share of the royalty pie got even smaller.
- Local media you can trust? Only if your too-loud uncle on Facebook counts, because social media conglomerates have overtaken them. Of course coming with a side of selling your data and ads that follow you around because you once clicked on a cool pair of shoes.
- The traditional media still kicking? They’re either barely hanging on or they’ve had to switch focus to our nationwide dumpster fire just to survive.
But the need to connect to each other—to understand what’s actually happening in our community— that never went away. If anything, it’s only become more important.
So join us in making space for the people of Portland to be heard. And this time around? We're gonna make it permanent.
